Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Pediatric Hospital Porter to join our vibrant team at University Hospital Southampton. In this crucial role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth and efficient movement of patients, equipment, and vital supplies within our busy Children’s Hospital. Your empathy and calm demeanor will be essential as you interact with young patients and their families, providing reassurance and support during their time with us. This is a physically demanding yet incredibly rewarding position where your contribution directly impacts patient care. We value reliability, teamwork, and a proactive approach to work. We are happy to cover the cost of your DBS check for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Transport pediatric patients safely and comfortably between wards, departments, and treatment areas, often involving beds, trolleys, or wheelchairs.
- Assist with the movement of medical equipment, samples, patient records, and supplies throughout the hospital.
- Provide compassionate support and reassurance to young patients and their families during transport.
- Ensure the cleanliness and readiness of transport equipment.
- Respond to urgent requests for portering services efficiently and professionally.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, especially those relating to child safeguarding.
- Communicate effectively with nursing staff, doctors, and other hospital personnel.
Required Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly with children and their families.
- A compassionate and empathetic approach.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Strong physical fitness to handle the demands of the role (lifting, pushing, walking long distances).
- Reliability and punctuality.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a healthcare or care-giving environment.
- Knowledge of basic first aid.
- An understanding of hospital environments and procedures.
