Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Paleontology Technician to join our field team immediately. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals passionate about ancient life, geological processes, and hands-on scientific discovery. You will work under the guidance of experienced paleontologists, contributing directly to significant fossil excavations and research projects across Pasco County and surrounding regions. Key Responsibilities
- Participate in all phases of paleontological fieldwork, including site reconnaissance, excavation, and fossil recovery.
- Operate and maintain field equipment such as shovels, picks, chisels, and plastering supplies.
- Carefully expose, document, collect, and package fossil specimens in the field.
- Assist with the stabilization and transportation of delicate fossils to the laboratory.
- Maintain accurate field notes, photographs, and GPS data for all collected specimens and sites.
- Adhere strictly to safety protocols and ethical guidelines for fossil collection and preservation.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and communicate findings clearly.
- Assist with preliminary fossil preparation and curation tasks in a laboratory setting as needed.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in paleontology, geology, or archaeology.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in various outdoor conditions (heat, humidity, uneven terrain).
- Excellent attention to detail and patience for meticulous tasks.
- Basic understanding of scientific data recording and documentation.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to field sites.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in fieldwork (paleontology, archaeology, geology, or related).
- Enrollment in or completion of coursework in paleontology, geology, biology, or environmental science.
- Experience with GPS devices and basic mapping software.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
