Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Avian & Exotic Animal Vet Intern to join our dynamic team in Salisbury. This internship provides an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the unique and challenging field of avian and exotic animal medicine. You will work closely with experienced veterinarians, assisting in diagnostics, treatment, and husbandry of a diverse range of species, including birds, reptiles, small mammals, and amphibians. This role is ideal for recent veterinary graduates or final-year students with a strong interest in exotic animal medicine looking to build foundational skills and knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians with physical examinations, diagnostics (radiography, ultrasonography, lab sample collection), and treatment plans for avian and exotic patients.
  • Perform daily patient care tasks, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and monitoring vital signs.
  • Administer medications and treatments under direct supervision.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records.
  • Provide client education on husbandry, nutrition, and preventative care for exotic pets.
  • Participate in case discussions, rounds, and continuing education sessions.
  • Support the veterinary team with emergency care as needed.
  • Ensure strict adherence to biosecurity protocols and maintain a clean and sterile working environment.

Required Skills

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree (or actively pursuing in final year).
  • Strong passion for avian and exotic animal medicine.
  • Excellent observational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic knowledge of exotic animal husbandry and common diseases.
  • Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and ethical practice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous externship or volunteer experience with avian or exotic animals.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., AAV, ARAV, AEMV).
  • Experience with diagnostic imaging and laboratory equipment.
  • Proficiency in veterinary practice management software.
