Job Description

The University of South Florida is seeking a passionate and detail-oriented Assistant Ethnomusicologist to join our cultural research and museum initiatives. This role involves supporting ongoing research projects, assisting with the curation and documentation of musical instrument collections, and contributing to educational programs that highlight global musical traditions. The Assistant Ethnomusicologist will work closely with senior researchers and curatorial staff to deepen understanding of music’s role in society and culture, with a particular focus on regional and international traditions relevant to our collection. This position offers a unique opportunity to blend academic research with practical museum experience, contributing to both scholarly discourse and public outreach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior ethnomusicologists in planning, conducting, and analyzing field research, including interviews, recordings, and archival work.
  • Contribute to the cataloging, preservation, and exhibition of musical instrument collections, ensuring accurate documentation and contextual information.
  • Prepare research reports, articles, and presentations for both academic and public audiences.
  • Support the development and delivery of educational programs, workshops, and lectures related to ethnomusicology and cultural music.
  • Conduct literature reviews and gather data pertinent to ongoing projects and new research directions.
  • Collaborate with museum staff on exhibit design and content, providing expertise on musical cultures and instruments.
  • Manage and organize digital and physical research materials, including audio/visual recordings and transcriptions.
  • Participate in grant writing and fundraising efforts to secure support for ethnomusicological research and museum projects.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ethnomusicological research methods and theories.
  • Proficiency in musical transcription and analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for collection management and data handling.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Familiarity with digital audio/visual recording and editing software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Ethnomusicology or a related discipline.
  • Experience in museum collections management or archival work.
  • Proficiency in one or more foreign languages relevant to ethnomusicological research.
  • Experience with public speaking or delivering educational presentations.
  • Previous fieldwork experience in a cultural setting.
