Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Ship Captain to lead our maritime operations at the Port of Swansea. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient navigation and operation of vessels within and around the port area, ensuring compliance with all international and national maritime regulations. This role requires exceptional leadership, navigational expertise, and a steadfast commitment to safety and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Command and navigate vessels safely and efficiently in port waters and designated sea areas.
- Ensure strict adherence to all international maritime laws, regulations, and company policies.
- Manage and lead the vessel's crew, fostering a culture of safety, discipline, and teamwork.
- Oversee all vessel operations, including cargo handling, bunkering, and maintenance schedules.
- Conduct regular safety drills and emergency preparedness exercises.
- Maintain accurate vessel logs, records, and reports.
- Communicate effectively with port authorities, pilots, and other stakeholders.
- Manage vessel budgets and resources effectively.
- Ensure the vessel's seaworthiness and compliance with class and flag state requirements.
- Implement and uphold environmental protection policies.
Required Skills
- Master (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2)
- Extensive experience as a Captain on commercial vessels, preferably in a port environment.
- In-depth knowledge of international maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISM Code).
- Proven leadership and crew management skills.
- Excellent communication and decision-making abilities.
- Proficiency in navigation systems and electronic charts (ECDIS).
- Strong understanding of vessel stability, cargo operations, and safety management systems.
- Valid medical fitness certificate (ENG1 or equivalent).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with pilotage and tug operations in a busy port.
- Knowledge of local Swansea port regulations and procedures.
- Additional maritime safety qualifications (e.g., Advanced Fire Fighting, Medical First Aid).
- Crisis management and human behaviour training.
