Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Pharmacy Purchasing Agent to join our dynamic supply chain team in Irvine, CA. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the efficient and cost-effective procurement of pharmaceutical products, ensuring optimal inventory levels and compliance with all regulatory standards. You will leverage your expertise in supply chain management and pharmacy operations to negotiate with vendors, monitor market trends, and implement strategic purchasing decisions that support OptumRx’s commitment to patient care and operational excellence. This position requires a meticulous individual with strong analytical skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving within a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the end-to-end procurement process for pharmaceutical products, including order placement, tracking, and delivery.
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and contracts with pharmaceutical manufacturers, wholesalers, and other vendors to secure the most favorable deals.
- Monitor inventory levels to prevent stock-outs and minimize waste, utilizing inventory management systems effectively.
- Analyze market trends, product availability, and pricing fluctuations to inform purchasing strategies.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations related to pharmaceutical purchasing and controlled substances.
- Collaborate closely with pharmacy operations, clinical teams, and finance departments to forecast demand and optimize supply chain efficiency.
- Resolve purchasing discrepancies, product recalls, and vendor issues promptly and effectively.
- Maintain accurate purchasing records and generate reports on key performance indicators (KPIs) for management review.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements within the purchasing function.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in pharmaceutical purchasing or supply chain management within a pharmacy setting.
- Proven negotiation skills and experience managing vendor relationships.
- Strong understanding of pharmaceutical products, including generics, brands, and specialty medications.
- Proficiency in inventory management software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Detailed knowledge of regulatory requirements related to pharmaceutical procurement (e.g., DEA, FDA, state boards of pharmacy).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Pharmacy, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification.
- Experience with large-scale pharmacy benefit management (PBM) or mail-order pharmacy operations.
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience with data analysis tools and advanced spreadsheet functions.
