Job Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Head of Department to lead one of our critical engineering or operational departments within our Portsmouth facility. This role is pivotal in driving departmental performance, fostering innovation, and ensuring the successful delivery of complex projects and programmes in the defence sector. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of departmental operations, from strategic planning and resource management to team leadership and technical excellence, ensuring alignment with BAE Systems’ overarching goals and commitments.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and direction for the assigned department, aligning objectives with company goals.
- Oversee the planning, execution, and successful delivery of departmental projects and programmes.
- Manage departmental budget, resources, and personnel effectively to achieve operational efficiency.
- Cultivate a high-performance culture, promoting continuous improvement, innovation, and professional development.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of technical specialists and managers.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards, regulations, and company policies.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with other departments and stakeholders to achieve integrated solutions.
- Represent the department in senior leadership meetings and engage with external partners and clients as required.
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with departmental operations and project delivery.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in a senior leadership or management role within an engineering or operations environment.
- Strong strategic planning and execution capabilities.
- Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with a track record of developing high-performing teams.
- Demonstrable experience in budget management and resource allocation.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management abilities.
- Deep understanding of project management methodologies and successful project delivery.
- Proficiency in relevant industry software and analytical tools.
- Ability to operate effectively in a complex, fast-paced defence environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or a related technical field.
- Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional accreditation.
- Experience with large-scale defence projects or complex manufacturing operations.
- Knowledge of Lean/Six Sigma principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
