Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Clinical Coder to join our dynamic team in Brighton. This crucial role involves accurately translating complex medical information from patient records into standardized alphanumeric codes, primarily using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classifications. Your work will directly support clinical governance, service planning, and accurate funding, ensuring the integrity and quality of our healthcare data. You will work closely with clinicians, administrative staff, and information teams to ensure comprehensive and precise data capture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately read, interpret, and code clinical information from patient records, including diagnoses, procedures, and co-morbidities, using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classification systems.
  • Ensure all coding adheres to national coding standards, clinical coding conventions, and local policies.
  • Communicate effectively with clinicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify documentation queries and obtain missing information required for accurate coding.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of clinical documentation quality within the Trust.
  • Participate in regular coding audit activities and maintain a high level of coding accuracy.
  • Keep up-to-date with changes in national coding standards, guidelines, and medical terminology through continuous professional development.
  • Assist in the training and development of junior coding staff or clinical teams on coding principles.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Clinical Coder, preferably within an NHS setting.
  • Excellent knowledge and practical application of ICD-10 and OPCS-4 coding classifications.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient in using clinical information systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Accreditation by the Clinical Coding & Casemix Group (CCCQ) or equivalent.
  • Experience with specialist coding areas (e.g., mental health, community services).
  • Familiarity with NHS data standards and information governance.
