Job Description

The Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery invites aspiring paleontologists to join our team as a Paleontology & Fossil Preparation Intern. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the mechanical and chemical preparation of fossil specimens for research and display.
  • Learn and apply best practices for fossil conservation and stabilization.
  • Accurately document and catalogue new acquisitions and prepared specimens in the collection database.
  • Support the curatorial team with inventory management, rehousing, and environmental monitoring of fossil storage areas.
  • Participate in occasional fieldwork or off-site collection visits, as opportunities arise.
  • Contribute to the development of interpretive materials or public engagement activities related to paleontology.
  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace, adhering to safety protocols.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated interest in paleontology, geology, or related natural sciences.
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity for delicate work.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Basic computer proficiency for data entry and documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Geology, Paleontology, Biology, Museum Studies, or a related field.
  • Previous volunteer or internship experience in a museum, lab, or academic setting.
  • Familiarity with scientific illustration or photography techniques.
  • Knowledge of fossil identification and basic geological principles.
