Job Description
Are you passionate about uncovering the secrets of Earth’s ancient past? The Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery invites aspiring paleontologists to join our team as a Paleontology & Fossil Preparation Intern. This immersive internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the exciting field of paleontology, working directly with our expert curatorial and conservation staff. You will contribute to the preservation, study, and display of our significant fossil collections, developing invaluable skills in specimen preparation, curation, and scientific documentation within a renowned museum environment. Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the mechanical and chemical preparation of fossil specimens for research and display.
- Learn and apply best practices for fossil conservation and stabilization.
- Accurately document and catalogue new acquisitions and prepared specimens in the collection database.
- Support the curatorial team with inventory management, rehousing, and environmental monitoring of fossil storage areas.
- Participate in occasional fieldwork or off-site collection visits, as opportunities arise.
- Contribute to the development of interpretive materials or public engagement activities related to paleontology.
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace, adhering to safety protocols.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated interest in paleontology, geology, or related natural sciences.
- Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity for delicate work.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work independently or as part of a team.
- Basic computer proficiency for data entry and documentation.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Geology, Paleontology, Biology, Museum Studies, or a related field.
