Job Description

Are you a passionate aspiring marine biologist looking to gain invaluable hands-on experience? APEM Ltd. is offering an exciting Marine Biology Research Internship focused on coastal fieldwork. This internship provides a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced marine scientists, contributing to critical research and conservation projects along the UK coastline. Based from our Buxton office, you will be involved in various aspects of field data collection, sample analysis, and environmental monitoring, playing a vital role in our understanding and protection of marine ecosystems. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior marine biologists in planning and executing coastal field surveys.
  • Participate in the collection and identification of marine flora and fauna samples from intertidal and subtidal zones.
  • Operate and maintain specialized field equipment, including GPS, cameras, and sampling tools.
  • Accurately record observational data, environmental parameters, and sample metadata.
  • Contribute to data entry, organization, and preliminary analysis using various software platforms.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all health, safety, and environmental protocols during fieldwork.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and contribute to project discussions.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Oceanography, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated strong interest and foundational knowledge in marine ecosystems and conservation.
  • Physical ability and willingness to work outdoors in challenging coastal environments (e.g., varying weather, uneven terrain, tidal conditions).
  • Excellent observational skills and meticulous attention to detail in data recording.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with an ability to follow instructions and work independently when required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous fieldwork experience, even voluntary or academic, in marine or aquatic environments.
  • Basic understanding of common UK coastal species identification.
  • Current First Aid certification.
  • Full, clean UK driving license.
  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for mapping and data visualization.
