Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Trainee Waste Management Supervisor to join our Public Works team. This entry-level position is ideal for an individual eager to start a career in waste management, learn supervisory skills, and contribute to the environmental well-being of our community. Under the guidance of experienced supervisors, you will gain hands-on experience in coordinating waste collection and disposal operations, ensuring compliance with local regulations, and supporting operational efficiency. This role offers comprehensive training and a clear path for professional development within a supportive municipal environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the daily coordination and supervision of waste collection and disposal activities.
- Learn and apply Town of Qualicum Beach waste management policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Support the scheduling and deployment of waste management personnel and equipment.
- Monitor waste routes and collection efficiency, identifying areas for improvement.
- Help maintain accurate records of waste volumes, collection incidents, and operational metrics.
- Participate in site inspections of waste transfer stations and collection points.
- Assist in responding to resident inquiries and resolving service issues related to waste management.
- Undertake assigned training programs and mentorship opportunities to develop supervisory and technical skills.
- Contribute to promoting environmental awareness and best practices within the community.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Physical ability to perform duties in various weather conditions and environments.
- Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver's License (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education or coursework in environmental science, operations management, or a related field.
- Previous experience (paid or volunteer) in a hands-on operational role.
- Familiarity with waste management practices or environmental regulations.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
