Job Description
Manitoba Hydro is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Welding Inspector / Metallurgist to join our dynamic team in Winnipeg. This is a critical role responsible for ensuring the integrity and quality of welding processes and metallic materials across our extensive energy infrastructure, including generation, transmission, and distribution assets. You will play a pivotal role in maintaining our operational safety and efficiency through meticulous inspection, material analysis, and adherence to industry codes and standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform visual and non-destructive inspections of welds and welded structures in accordance with applicable codes (e.g., CSA, AWS, ASME) and project specifications.
- Conduct metallurgical evaluations, failure analysis, and material investigations to determine root causes of issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Review and approve welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder performance qualifications (WPQ).
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on welding techniques, material selection, and fabrication processes to project teams and contractors.
- Monitor welding activities on-site to ensure compliance with quality control plans, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports, maintain accurate records, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in welding and metallurgical practices.
- Assist in the development and implementation of quality assurance/quality control programs for welding and materials.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Welding Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of progressive experience as a Welding Inspector or Metallurgist in heavy industry, energy, or manufacturing.
- Hold a valid CSA W178.2 Level II or CWB Welding Inspector certification, or equivalent (e.g., AWS CWI, CSWIP 3.1/3.2).
- Proficient in various NDT methods (PT, MT, UT, RT interpretation) and understanding of their application.
- Strong knowledge of welding processes (e.g., SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW), metallurgy, material properties, and failure mechanisms.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in Manitoba or eligibility for registration.
- Experience with pipeline, power generation, or high-voltage transmission projects.
- Knowledge of corrosion mechanisms and mitigation strategies.
- Familiarity with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001).
- Advanced knowledge of fracture mechanics, fatigue, and creep analysis.
