Job Description

Appen is seeking detail-oriented and culturally astute Dialect & Slang Annotators with a strong focus on the local culture of Winston-Salem, NC. This is a remote, work-from-home (WFH) contract position, offering flexibility and the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge AI development. In this role, you will be responsible for accurately identifying, transcribing, and annotating text, audio, or video data that contains regional dialects, slang, idioms, and nuanced cultural references specific to the Winston-Salem area. Your keen understanding of local linguistic patterns and cultural context will be crucial in helping improve AI systems’ understanding of human language. This position is ideal for individuals with native-level fluency in English, a deep connection to their local community, and exceptional attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately identify and categorize dialectal variations, slang, colloquialisms, and cultural references within text, audio, or video data.
  • Provide clear and concise contextual explanations for challenging linguistic elements and cultural nuances encountered during annotation.
  • Adhere strictly to project-specific guidelines, quality standards, and deadlines.
  • Utilize proprietary annotation tools and platforms effectively after receiving training.
  • Collaborate asynchronously with project managers and linguistic experts as needed to clarify guidelines or resolve complex annotation queries.
  • Maintain a high level of consistency and accuracy in all annotation tasks.

Required Skills

  • Native-level fluency in English, specifically demonstrating a deep understanding of local dialects, slang, and cultural expressions prevalent in the Winston-Salem, NC region.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical capabilities to discern subtle linguistic differences.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and meet project deadlines while working remotely.
  • Strong computer literacy and comfort with learning new software tools and online platforms quickly.
  • Excellent communication skills to articulate observations and questions clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in linguistic annotation, transcription, data entry, or content moderation.
  • A background or strong interest in linguistics, anthropology, sociology, communication studies, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with the concepts of artificial intelligence, machine learning, or natural language processing (NLP).
  • Experience working with diverse data types (text, audio, video).
