Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Virtual Legal Aide to join our Public Defender’s Office team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to critical legal services from a fully remote setting, supporting our barristers and solicitors in providing robust defense for clients. The successful candidate will play an integral role in case preparation, legal research, and administrative support, helping to ensure the smooth operation of our virtual legal services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research and analysis on relevant statutes, case law, and legal articles.
  • Prepare and organize legal documents, including briefs, motions, subpoenas, and discovery requests.
  • Assist in the preparation for hearings, trials, and client meetings.
  • Maintain and organize case files, ensuring all documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, court staff, and external legal professionals via phone, email, and video conferencing.
  • Schedule appointments, court dates, and manage calendars for legal professionals.
  • Perform administrative tasks as required to support the legal team's operations.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in legal research tools and databases (e.g., LexisNexis, Westlaw).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Understanding of legal ethics and professional conduct.
  • Reliable high-speed internet connection and a dedicated home office setup.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies, Paralegal Studies, or a related field.
  • Prior experience working in a legal aid office, public defender's office, or similar legal environment.
  • Familiarity with UK legal procedures and court systems.
  • Experience with case management software.
