Job Description

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and experienced VFX Technical Director (TD) to join our innovative team in Kitchener, Ontario. This role is open to candidates who qualify for the Global Talent Visa program, providing an exciting opportunity for international experts to contribute to our award-winning projects in Canada. As a VFX Technical Director, you will be instrumental in developing and maintaining tools, pipelines, and workflows that empower our artists to create breathtaking visual effects. You will bridge the gap between artistic vision and technical execution, troubleshooting complex issues and driving efficiency across various departments. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain custom tools and scripts using Python, C++, and other relevant programming languages.
  • Collaborate with artists and supervisors to identify technical challenges and propose innovative solutions for production pipelines.
  • Provide front-line technical support to artists, troubleshooting software issues, rendering problems, and pipeline bottlenecks.
  • Develop and optimize workflows for various VFX departments including Modeling, Rigging, Animation, FX, Lighting, and Compositing.
  • Ensure consistent application of studio standards and best practices across all technical aspects of production.
  • Conduct research and development (R&D) into new technologies and methodologies to enhance visual quality and production efficiency.
  • Document technical processes, tools, and workflows for knowledge sharing and future reference.
  • Mentor junior technical artists and contribute to a collaborative, growth-oriented team environment.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Python scripting and object-oriented programming.
  • Strong understanding of 3D software APIs, particularly Autodesk Maya (MEL, Python API).
  • Experience with other DCC applications (e.g., Houdini, Nuke) and their scripting interfaces.
  • Solid knowledge of computer graphics fundamentals, linear algebra, and rendering principles.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git, Perforce).
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in a VFX production environment as a Technical Director or similar role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Animation, or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in C++ for developing high-performance tools and plugins.
  • Experience with modern rendering engines (e.g., Arnold, Redshift, V-Ray).
  • Knowledge of asset management systems (e.g., Shotgun/ShotGrid).
  • Experience with cloud-based VFX pipelines and distributed computing.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and shell scripting.
  • Prior experience working on feature film or high-end episodic television productions.
  • Leadership experience or a demonstrated ability to mentor team members.
