Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Stroke Nurse to join our dynamic stroke unit. In this vital role, you will be instrumental in the rapid assessment, treatment, and ongoing care of patients experiencing acute stroke, as well as supporting their rehabilitation journey. You will work within a multidisciplinary team, providing expert nursing care, patient education, and emotional support to patients and their families during a critical time. This position requires a commitment to evidence-based practice, continuous professional development, and a patient-centred approach to care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting comprehensive neurological assessments and monitoring of stroke patients.
  • Administering medications and treatments as prescribed, including thrombolysis monitoring.
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team (doctors, therapists, dietitians) to develop and implement individualized care plans.
  • Providing education and support to patients and their families regarding stroke recovery, prevention, and lifestyle adjustments.
  • Managing patient transfers and discharges, ensuring seamless transitions of care.
  • Participating in ward rounds, contributing to care planning and decision-making.
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient records.
  • Responding to emergencies and acting promptly to changes in patient condition.

Required Skills

  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Minimum of 3 years post-registration nursing experience, with at least 1 year in an acute stroke or neurology setting.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of stroke pathophysiology, assessment, and management.
  • Proficiency in neurological assessment tools (e.g., NIHSS).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team-working skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and make sound clinical decisions under pressure.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Immediate Life Support (ILS) certification.
  • Post-registration qualification in stroke care or neurology.
  • Experience with discharge planning and community liaison.
  • Mentorship qualification or experience in teaching junior staff.
