Job Description
The University of Guelph Athletics is seeking a passionate and dedicated Sports Psychology Intern to join our dynamic athletic counseling team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in supporting collegiate athletes’ mental well-being and performance. Working under the supervision of licensed sports psychologists, the intern will contribute to developing and implementing mental skills training programs, providing individual and group counseling support, and assisting with research initiatives. This role is ideal for individuals pursuing a career in sport psychology, counseling, or a related field, looking to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical, high-performance environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the delivery of mental skills training workshops and presentations for varsity athletic teams.
- Provide one-on-one and group sport psychology counseling under direct supervision.
- Support the development of personalized mental performance plans for student-athletes.
- Contribute to the assessment and evaluation of existing sport psychology programs.
- Engage in relevant research projects related to athletic performance and well-being.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of athlete interactions and program activities.
- Collaborate with coaches, athletic trainers, and other support staff to ensure integrated athlete care.
- Participate in regular supervision meetings and professional development opportunities.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Master's or Doctoral program in Sport Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or a closely related field.
- Foundational knowledge of sport psychology theories, techniques, and ethical guidelines.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Demonstrated empathy, cultural competence, and sensitivity to diverse populations.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working with athletes in a counseling or coaching capacity.
- Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., CSPA, AASP).
- Experience with data collection and basic statistical analysis.
- Familiarity with the demands and culture of collegiate athletics.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
