Job Description
We are seeking a highly meticulous and experienced Sheet Music Editor to join our remote team. This role demands exceptional attention to detail and a profound understanding of music notation, theory, and engraving best practices. As a Sheet Music Editor, you will be responsible for reviewing, correcting, and refining musical scores across a diverse range of genres and instrumentation, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and readability for our global audience. This is a crucial role for maintaining Hal Leonard’s reputation for publishing excellence. This position is 100% remote, allowing you to work from your home office.
Key Responsibilities
- Rigorously review and proofread sheet music for errors in pitch, rhythm, harmony, articulation, dynamics, text, and formatting.
- Ensure all scores adhere to established engraving standards and stylistic guidelines specific to the genre and instrumentation.
- Collaborate with composers, arrangers, and transcribers to clarify discrepancies and implement necessary revisions.
- Utilize specialized music notation software (e.g., Finale, Sibelius, Dorico) for editing and corrections.
- Maintain consistent quality and accuracy across a high volume of diverse musical projects.
- Provide constructive feedback to transcribers and engravers to improve overall output quality.
- Manage project timelines and priorities to meet publication deadlines.
- Stay updated on current music engraving standards and software advancements.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in sheet music editing or music engraving.
- Expert-level understanding of music theory, harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration.
- Proficiency in at least one major music notation software (Finale, Sibelius, or Dorico).
- Exceptional attention to detail and a keen eye for subtle errors.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects effectively in a remote environment.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain high accuracy under tight deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Theory, Music Education, or a related field.
- Experience with various musical genres, including classical, jazz, pop, and educational.
- Familiarity with copyright best practices in music publishing.
- Proficiency in multiple music notation software programs.
- Experience with proofreading for print and digital publications.
