Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced R&D Manager to lead a dedicated team of engineers and scientists in our Edinburgh facility. In this critical role, you will be responsible for driving innovation, managing complex research and development projects from conception to completion, and ensuring the successful delivery of cutting-edge solutions for our defence and aerospace programmes. You will foster a culture of excellence, mentor team members, and collaborate extensively with internal and external stakeholders to meet strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a multidisciplinary R&D team, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
- Define, plan, and execute R&D projects, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Develop and implement strategic R&D roadmaps aligned with business objectives and market needs.
- Oversee the full lifecycle of product development, from research and prototyping to testing and validation.
- Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., engineering, manufacturing, product management) and external partners.
- Identify and evaluate new technologies, materials, and processes to enhance product capabilities.
- Manage project budgets, resources, and risk assessments effectively.
- Ensure all R&D activities comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and company policies.
- Present project status, findings, and strategic recommendations to senior management and stakeholders.
Required Skills
- PhD or Master's degree in Engineering (e.g., Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical), Physics, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 7 years of proven experience in R&D project management, preferably within the defence, aerospace, or high-tech industries.
- Demonstrated leadership and team management capabilities, with experience in motivating and developing technical talent.
- Strong technical expertise in relevant areas such as advanced materials, sensor technologies, embedded systems, or complex systems integration.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in project management methodologies and tools.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with government contracting and defence industry standards (e.g., DEF STAN, MIL-STD).
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.
- Track record of successful patent applications or significant research publications.
- Experience in systems engineering principles.
