Job Description
Are you passionate about Florida’s ancient past and eager to share its incredible stories with others? Florida State Parks is seeking an enthusiastic Paleontology Interpreter to join our team in New Port Richey. This entry-level role is perfect for individuals with a strong interest in paleontology and a natural talent for engaging guests, even without a formal degree. You will be instrumental in bringing Florida’s prehistoric life to visitors of all ages, creating memorable and educational experiences through interactive programs, exhibits, and guided discussions. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver engaging interpretive programs, tours, and presentations about Florida's paleontology, fossils, and prehistoric ecosystems.
- Interact with park visitors, answering questions, and providing accurate, accessible information about exhibits and natural features.
- Facilitate hands-on activities and demonstrations, such as fossil identification, replica casting, or geological exploration.
- Assist in the maintenance and presentation of interpretive exhibits and educational materials.
- Ensure a high level of guest satisfaction by providing excellent customer service and fostering a welcoming environment.
- Collaborate with park staff on special events, educational initiatives, and outreach programs.
- Observe and report any safety concerns or maintenance needs within interpretive areas.
- Continuously learn and stay updated on paleontological discoveries relevant to Florida and the broader scientific community.
Required Skills
- Excellent verbal communication and public speaking skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a friendly and approachable demeanor.
- Ability to engage diverse audiences, including children and adults.
- Demonstrated passion for paleontology, natural history, and environmental education.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic outdoor and indoor environment.
- Basic computer proficiency (email, word processing).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a customer service, retail, tourism, or public-facing role.
- Volunteer experience at a museum, park, zoo, or similar educational institution.
- Knowledge of Florida's natural history and ecosystems.
- Bilingual communication skills (especially Spanish).
