Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Digital Archivist Intern to join our dynamic team. This paid internship offers a unique opportunity for students interested in library science, archival studies, information technology, or related fields to gain practical experience in digital preservation and access. The intern will assist in the ongoing efforts to digitize, describe, and manage our growing collection of digital assets, contributing to the long-term accessibility and integrity of our scholarly resources. This role provides hands-on experience with modern archival practices, metadata standards, and digital asset management systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the digitization of various physical materials, including documents, photographs, and audio-visual recordings, following established best practices.
- Perform quality control checks on digitized content to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to technical specifications.
- Create and edit metadata records for digital objects, adhering to descriptive standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, EAD).
- Ingest digital content into the library's digital asset management system and/or institutional repository.
- Participate in the organization and arrangement of digital files and collections.
- Conduct research on digital preservation tools, techniques, and emerging trends.
- Contribute to the development of documentation for digital archiving workflows and procedures.
- Collaborate with other library staff on special projects related to digital collections and access.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, History, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace).
- Basic understanding of digital file formats and digital content management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS).
- Experience with digital imaging equipment and software (e.g., scanners, Photoshop).
- Basic knowledge of digital preservation principles and practices.
- Exposure to digital asset management systems or institutional repositories.
- Interest in cultural heritage, history, or academic research.
