Job Description
We are seeking a highly innovative and experienced Flavor & Fragrance Chemist with a strong focus on Sensory Science to join our dynamic R&D team in Bloomington, Indiana. This pivotal role involves leading the development of novel flavor and fragrance compounds, integrating advanced sensory evaluation techniques into the entire product lifecycle. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in organic chemistry, formulation, and an acute understanding of how chemical structures translate into perceivable sensory attributes. You will be instrumental in driving projects from concept to commercialization, collaborating cross-functionally to deliver market-leading innovations.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, synthesize, and formulate novel flavor and fragrance compounds using advanced chemical techniques.
- Develop and implement robust sensory evaluation methodologies to characterize and optimize product performance.
- Analyze complex sensory data using statistical methods to provide actionable insights for product development.
- Collaborate closely with perfumers, flavorists, sensory scientists, and marketing teams to align technical development with consumer preferences and market trends.
- Manage multiple R&D projects concurrently, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to quality standards.
- Conduct research into emerging technologies and raw materials to identify new opportunities for innovation.
- Maintain meticulous laboratory records, prepare technical reports, and present findings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure all experimental procedures comply with safety, regulatory, and quality assurance guidelines.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Food Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of industrial experience in flavor or fragrance chemistry, with a strong emphasis on sensory applications.
- Proven expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, and compound characterization (e.g., GC-MS, NMR, HPLC).
- Proficiency in designing and conducting sensory experiments, including descriptive analysis, discrimination tests, and consumer panels.
- Strong statistical analysis skills for interpreting sensory and analytical data.
- Excellent project management, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with olfactometry or gustatory receptor research.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements for flavors and fragrances (e.g., FEMA GRAS, IFRA standards).
- Track record of innovation, including patent applications or successful product launches.
- Leadership experience in a laboratory or project team setting.
