Job Description

Kiewit Corporation is seeking a dedicated and vigilant High Paying Paleontology Monitor to join our construction team in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This crucial role is responsible for overseeing construction activities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local paleontological resource protection laws and regulations. You will play a vital part in identifying, protecting, and documenting paleontological resources that may be encountered during large-scale construction projects.

As a Paleontology Monitor, you will be on the front lines, acting as a liaison between construction crews and paleontological specialists. Your keen eye and expertise will help preserve invaluable scientific and cultural heritage while ensuring project timelines are maintained. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a strong background in paleontology and a commitment to responsible construction practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily on-site monitoring of excavation and ground-disturbing activities during construction.
  • Identify and evaluate potential paleontological resources or discoveries.
  • Implement appropriate mitigation measures and protection protocols for identified resources.
  • Document all findings, observations, and activities with detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS data.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, construction crews, and regulatory agencies.
  • Provide initial assessment and stabilization of discovered fossils, as necessary.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant paleontological resource management plans and permits.
  • Participate in project planning meetings to advise on potential paleontological impacts.
  • Prepare daily and weekly progress reports on monitoring activities and findings.

Required Skills

  • Proven knowledge of paleontological principles, field methods, and fossil identification.
  • Experience in archaeological or paleontological field survey and excavation.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to interpret geological maps and construction plans.
  • Proficiency with GPS devices and basic field data collection software.
  • Understanding of federal, state, and local environmental and cultural resource protection laws (e.g., NEPA, NHPA).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a dynamic construction environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in paleontological monitoring or field archaeology, preferably within a construction context.
  • OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour construction safety certification.
  • Experience with report writing and technical documentation.
