Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Country House Hotel Porter to join our esteemed team at Wivenhoe House Hotel. The successful candidate will be a vital part of our operations, ensuring the smooth running of guest arrivals, departures, and internal logistics. Key Responsibilities

  • Warmly welcome and assist guests with their luggage upon arrival and departure, ensuring a seamless check-in/out experience.
  • Safely transport luggage, parcels, and other items to and from guest rooms, event spaces, and various hotel areas.
  • Assist with the efficient setup and breakdown of meeting rooms and event spaces, including furniture arrangement, AV equipment handling, and room preparation.
  • Maintain the impeccable cleanliness and orderliness of all public areas, including lobbies, hallways, entrances, and guest lounges.
  • Run errands for guests and management as required, demonstrating discretion, reliability, and excellent time management.
  • Familiarize yourself with all hotel services, facilities, and local attractions to provide accurate, helpful information and recommendations to guests.
  • Handle guest inquiries, requests, and minor issues promptly and professionally, escalating complex matters to management when necessary.
  • Ensure all security procedures are followed diligently, including key management, package handling, and monitoring of public areas for guest safety.
  • Operate hotel vehicles, if properly licensed and required, for guest transfers, deliveries, or other operational needs.
  • Support other hotel departments as needed, fostering a collaborative environment to ensure a comprehensive and positive guest experience.

  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and move heavy luggage and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a steadfast commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness, service, and professionalism.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as an integral part of a cohesive team.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, to meet operational demands.
  • Legal right to work in the United Kingdom without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience of at least 6 months in a hotel or hospitality environment, particularly in a porter or similar guest-facing role.
  • A full, clean UK driving license.
  • Basic knowledge of hotel operations, health and safety procedures, and local Colchester/Essex area attractions.
  • Experience working in a luxury, boutique, or country house hotel setting.
