Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Infection Control Nurse to join our dedicated team within NHS Lothian. The successful candidate will play a critical role in preventing and controlling infections across our healthcare facilities, contributing significantly to patient safety and public health. This position requires a proactive individual with a strong clinical background and a passion for upholding the highest standards of infection prevention.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor infection prevention and control policies and procedures in line with national guidelines.
  • Conduct surveillance activities for healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Provide expert advice and support to clinical staff on all aspects of infection control practices, including hand hygiene, decontamination, and aseptic techniques.
  • Lead and participate in outbreak investigations, implementing timely and effective control measures.
  • Deliver education and training programs to staff across all departments to enhance awareness and compliance with infection control protocols.
  • Undertake regular audits of infection control practices and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to promote a culture of infection prevention and patient safety.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports on infection control activities and outcomes.

Required Skills

  • Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Minimum of 3 years post-registration experience, with significant experience in an acute care setting.
  • Proven experience in infection prevention and control.
  • Excellent knowledge of current national infection control guidelines and legislation.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and train staff effectively.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and report writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate qualification in Infection Prevention and Control.
  • Experience in conducting infection control audits and developing action plans.
  • Experience with electronic patient record systems and infection surveillance software.
