Job Description

We are seeking a talented and experienced In-House Counsel to join our dynamic legal team based in Warrington. This role offers an exciting opportunity to provide comprehensive legal advice and support across various departments within United Utilities. You will be instrumental in managing legal risks, ensuring compliance, and contributing to the strategic objectives of a leading utility company. The successful candidate will handle a broad range of legal matters, including commercial contracts, regulatory affairs, litigation, and corporate governance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice and support to all business units on a wide range of legal matters, including commercial, regulatory, and corporate issues.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate various commercial contracts, agreements, and legal documents with third parties, ensuring company interests are protected.
  • Advise on compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and industry standards (e.g., environmental law, competition law, data protection).
  • Manage and oversee external legal counsel relationships, ensuring cost-effective and high-quality services.
  • Assist in the management of legal disputes, litigation, and claims, working closely with internal stakeholders and external advisors.
  • Support corporate governance initiatives, including advising on board procedures, company secretarial matters, and internal policies.
  • Identify and mitigate legal risks across the business, developing proactive strategies to ensure legal hygiene.
  • Stay abreast of changes in legislation and regulatory frameworks relevant to the utilities sector and advise on their impact.

Required Skills

  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister in England and Wales with a current practising certificate.
  • Minimum of 5 years Post-Qualification Experience (PQE), preferably gained in-house or at a reputable law firm.
  • Strong understanding of commercial law, contract drafting, and negotiation.
  • Demonstrable experience in regulatory compliance and risk management.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to advise non-legal colleagues effectively.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within the utilities sector or another highly regulated industry.
  • Knowledge of environmental law, planning law, or property law.
  • Experience with litigation management.
  • A background in public law or administrative law.
