Job Description
Mind Charity is seeking compassionate and dedicated individuals to join our team as a Remote Mental Health Crisis Hotline Intern. This is an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on experience in mental health support and crisis intervention from the comfort of your own home. As an intern, you will play a crucial role in providing immediate, empathetic, and non-judgmental support to individuals experiencing mental health crises. This position is 100% remote, allowing you to make a significant difference in people’s lives from anywhere in the UK, with primary operational oversight connected to our Leeds hub. This role is ideal for those passionate about mental health and looking to develop essential skills in a supportive, professional environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to incoming calls, texts, or chat messages from individuals in mental health crisis, offering immediate support.
- Provide active listening, emotional support, and empathetic understanding to service users.
- Assess immediate risks and collaborate with supervisors on appropriate crisis intervention strategies and safety plans.
- Offer information and referrals to relevant mental health services, community resources, and long-term support options.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and detailed records of all interactions in compliance with data protection policies.
- Participate in regular training sessions, workshops, and supervision meetings to enhance skills and ensure service quality and personal well-being.
- Adhere to all confidentiality protocols, ethical guidelines, and Mind Charity's safeguarding policies.
Required Skills
- Exceptional active listening and empathy skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities, clear and concise.
- Ability to remain calm, composed, and professional in high-stress and emotionally charged situations.
- Demonstrated commitment to mental health advocacy and providing non-judgmental support.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications and digital communication tools (e.g., email, chat platforms).
- Reliable internet connection and a private, quiet workspace conducive to confidential conversations.
- Availability to commit to a consistent schedule for the duration of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Nursing, or a related human services field.
- Previous volunteer or work experience in a support role, helpline, crisis center, or any mental health setting.
- Basic understanding of different mental health conditions, crisis intervention techniques, and safeguarding principles.
- Familiarity with UK mental health services and pathways to care.
- Fluency in additional languages is considered a significant asset.
