Job Description
Are you passionate about supporting our nation’s veterans? Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veteran Affairs Outreach Assistant to join our team in Newark, New Jersey. This vital role involves actively engaging with veterans, their families, and community partners to provide information, resources, and direct assistance in navigating veteran benefits and services. You will be a frontline advocate, helping veterans connect with the support they’ve earned and deserve. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct outreach to veterans, their families, and caregivers within the local community to inform them of available DAV services and VA benefits.
- Assist veterans with completing forms, applications, and documentation required for VA claims and other benefit programs.
- Organize and participate in local outreach events, job fairs, and community gatherings focused on veteran support.
- Provide accurate information and referrals to appropriate VA departments, community partners, and DAV programs.
- Maintain meticulous records of veteran interactions and assistance provided, ensuring confidentiality and compliance.
- Collaborate with DAV Chapter Service Officers and other staff to ensure seamless support for veterans.
- Stay updated on changes in VA policies, benefits, and local resources relevant to veterans.
- Act as a liaison between veterans and various support agencies, advocating for their needs when necessary.
Required Skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and empathetic approach.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for record-keeping and application processes.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic data entry.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- A genuine passion for serving veterans and a commitment to the DAV mission.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working with veterans or in a non-profit/social services setting.
- Knowledge of Veteran Affairs (VA) benefits and services.
- Familiarity with the local Newark community and its veteran population.
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish) is a plus.
