Job Description
Join Northern Powergrid as a Trainee Gas/Electricity Inspector and embark on a rewarding career in public utilities. This entry-level position offers comprehensive training designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills required to ensure the safety and compliance of our critical gas and electricity infrastructure. You will work alongside experienced professionals, learning about industry regulations, inspection protocols, and hazard identification, contributing directly to the safe and reliable delivery of energy to our communities. This is an on-site role that involves field work across the Sheffield area.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in all training programs and workshops, demonstrating a commitment to learning and development.
- Shadow experienced inspectors during site visits and routine inspections of gas and electricity assets.
- Learn to identify potential safety hazards, non-compliance issues, and defects in utility infrastructure.
- Familiarise yourself with relevant industry standards, company policies, and health and safety legislation.
- Assist with accurate documentation and reporting of inspection findings using company systems.
- Adhere strictly to all health and safety guidelines and procedures, prioritising personal and public safety.
- Develop a strong understanding of gas and electricity distribution networks, components, and operational practices.
Required Skills
- A strong desire to learn and develop a long-term career in public utilities.
- Excellent attention to detail and a methodical, organised approach to tasks.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively as part of a dedicated team.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting and interaction.
- A valid UK driving license (or ability to obtain one within a probationary period) is essential for field work.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and report generation.
Preferred Qualifications
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and a science or technical subject.
- An interest in engineering, infrastructure, or public safety.
- Awareness of health and safety principles and a proactive approach to risk management.
- Previous experience in a role requiring attention to detail, adherence to procedures, or outdoor work.
