Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and physically capable Stagehand to join our production team at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh. The Stagehand will be responsible for the safe and efficient setup, operation, and strike of stage sets, props, lighting, and sound equipment for various performances. This role requires strong teamwork, attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high safety standards in a dynamic live theatre environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the loading and unloading of theatrical equipment and scenery.
  • Assemble and dismantle stage sets, props, and rigging under the direction of the technical team.
  • Operate and maintain counterweight systems and other stage machinery safely.
  • Support lighting and sound technicians with equipment setup, focusing, and cable management.
  • Execute scene changes and prop placement efficiently during live performances.
  • Perform basic maintenance and repairs on stage equipment as needed.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and theatre policies.
  • Work collaboratively with other crew members, performers, and technical staff.

Required Skills

  • Physical fitness and ability to lift heavy objects (up to 25kg) and work at heights.
  • Basic understanding of theatrical terminology and stagecraft.
  • Proficiency with common hand and power tools.
  • Strong commitment to safety procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working as a Stagehand or in a similar theatrical production role.
  • Knowledge of rigging techniques and theatrical fly systems.
  • Relevant vocational training or certifications in stagecraft, technical theatre, or health and safety.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Experience with automated stage machinery.
