Job Description

Join our vital Public Works team as a Sewer Grate Debris Clearer! This essential role involves manually clearing blockages from street-level sewer grates and drains throughout the city of Reno. Your work will directly prevent flooding, maintain proper drainage, and ensure the safety and cleanliness of our urban environment. This position requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and a commitment to public service. You will be responsible for inspecting grates, removing accumulated leaves, trash, sediment, and other debris, and reporting any significant infrastructure issues. This is a hands-on, outdoor position critical to the well-being of our city.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections of sewer grates and storm drains across designated areas of Reno.
  • Manually remove debris such as leaves, trash, sediment, and organic matter from grates using hand tools.
  • Operate basic hand tools and light equipment safely and effectively for debris removal.
  • Report significant blockages, damaged grates, or infrastructure defects to supervisors promptly.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed work and observations.
  • Assist other Public Works teams with general maintenance tasks as needed.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail for identifying and clearing debris.
  • Basic understanding of safety procedures and willingness to follow strict guidelines.
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid Nevada Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in municipal maintenance, landscaping, or general labor.
  • Familiarity with the streets and neighborhoods of Reno, Nevada.
  • Knowledge of basic stormwater drainage systems.
