Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Part-time Science Museum Docent with a specialization in Paleontology to join our team in Santa Maria. This role offers flexible hours and is perfect for individuals passionate about sharing their love for ancient life, fossils, and geological history with visitors of all ages. You will be instrumental in bringing our paleontological exhibits to life, leading interactive tours, and engaging guests through hands-on activities. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead engaging and educational tours of paleontology exhibits for diverse groups, including school children, families, and general visitors.
  • Interpret complex scientific concepts related to fossils, evolution, and ancient ecosystems in an accessible and exciting manner.
  • Facilitate hands-on activities, demonstrations, and discussions that enhance the visitor experience.
  • Answer visitor questions accurately and enthusiastically, fostering curiosity and a deeper understanding of paleontology.
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of educational materials and exhibit areas.
  • Ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors in assigned exhibit areas.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development sessions to enhance knowledge and interpretive skills.
  • Maintain a friendly, welcoming, and professional demeanor at all times.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated passion for paleontology, geology, or related earth sciences.
  • Excellent verbal communication and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to engage and connect with diverse audiences, including children and adults.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a customer-service oriented approach.
  • Reliability and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and occasional evenings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, Education, or a related scientific field.
  • Prior experience in informal education, museum interpretation, or public speaking.
  • Familiarity with California's natural history and paleontological record.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) is a plus.
