Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Housing & Community Development Intern with a focus on Zoning. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in local government planning, land use regulations, and community development initiatives. The intern will work closely with experienced planners and zoning officials, contributing to projects that shape the future of Livingston Parish. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in urban planning, public administration, or real estate development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the review and processing of zoning applications, ensuring compliance with local ordinances and comprehensive plans.
  • Conduct research on zoning regulations, land use patterns, and community development best practices.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation related to zoning cases and planning projects.
  • Support staff in responding to public inquiries regarding zoning requirements, permits, and development guidelines.
  • Participate in public meetings, workshops, and community outreach events to gather input and provide information.
  • Maintain and update departmental databases and geographic information systems (GIS) related to zoning and property data.
  • Perform site visits as needed to verify property information and zoning compliance.
  • Assist with special projects related to housing initiatives, economic development, and long-range planning.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an accredited college or university program in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Geography, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of land use planning principles and zoning regulations.
  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS).
  • Experience with data entry and database management.
  • Valid Louisiana Driver's License and access to reliable transportation for occasional site visits.
