Job Description

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our team as Trainee Highway Inspectors. This entry-level position offers comprehensive on-the-job training and mentorship, providing you with the essential skills and knowledge to become a certified Highway Inspector. You will learn to monitor the quality of construction and maintenance projects on Tennessee’s highways, ensuring compliance with state and federal standards, specifications, and safety regulations. Key Responsibilities
- Assist experienced inspectors in performing routine inspections of highway construction and maintenance projects.
- Learn to identify deficiencies, non-compliance with plans and specifications, and safety hazards on project sites.
- Document inspection findings, including taking photographs, measurements, and maintaining detailed records.
- Familiarize yourself with construction plans, blueprints, specifications, and relevant state and federal regulations.
- Participate in training sessions and workshops to develop technical knowledge and inspection skills.
- Communicate effectively with project contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders under supervision.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures on construction sites.
- Prepare preliminary reports and assist with data entry as required.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- Ability to read and understand technical documents and instructions.
- Strong attention to detail and observational skills.
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and traverse uneven terrain.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications
- Some coursework or vocational training in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field.
- Experience in a construction or outdoor work environment.
