Job Description
Tetra Tech is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Paleo Support Specialist to join our team in North Las Vegas, Nevada. This civilian role will primarily involve supporting projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), focusing on paleontological resource identification, assessment, and mitigation. The successful candidate will contribute to various environmental and cultural resource management projects, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on significant projects that protect and preserve paleontological heritage while contributing to critical infrastructure development.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct paleontological field surveys and monitoring during ground-disturbing activities.
- Identify, document, and recover fossil resources in accordance with established protocols and permits.
- Prepare detailed field notes, photographs, and maps of paleontological discoveries.
- Assist with the laboratory processing, cataloging, and curation of collected fossil specimens.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, including Paleontological Resource Assessments (PRAs) and Paleontological Resource Management Plans (PRMPs).
- Perform archival research and literature reviews to assess paleontological sensitivity of project areas.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, regulatory agencies, and tribal representatives.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations on all project sites.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in paleontological fieldwork or cultural resource management.
- Proficiency in identifying common fossil types and geological formations relevant to the Western United States.
- Experience with GPS units, GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS), and other field data collection technologies.
- Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in varying field conditions, including rugged terrain and extreme weather.
- Valid U.S. Driver's License and ability to travel to project sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology or a related discipline.
- Experience working on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) or other federal projects.
- Knowledge of federal and state cultural/paleontological resource laws and regulations (e.g., NEPA, NHPA, PRPA).
- Familiarity with California or Nevada specific paleontological resources and stratigraphy.
- Experience with fossil preparation and curation techniques.
