Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Archaeological/Paleontological Cross-Trainee to join our interdisciplinary field teams. This entry-level position is designed for individuals passionate about unraveling the mysteries of the past through hands-on field and laboratory work. You will gain invaluable experience across both archaeological and paleontological disciplines, working on diverse projects ranging from prehistoric sites to fossil localities. This role is ideal for those eager to learn, contribute to significant research, and build a foundational career in geoscience, anthropology, or related fields.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in field excavations, surveys, and site recording for both archaeological and paleontological projects.
- Learn and apply best practices for data collection, including mapping, photography, and artifact/fossil recovery.
- Assist with initial processing, cleaning, sorting, and cataloging of recovered materials in a laboratory setting.
- Contribute to maintaining field equipment and ensuring site safety protocols are followed.
- Document findings accurately through detailed notes, drawings, and digital records.
- Work collaboratively with senior researchers, faculty, and fellow trainees.
- Conduct preliminary research and literature reviews as directed.
- Participate in educational outreach activities and presentations as opportunities arise.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED
- Strong interest and passion for archaeology, paleontology, or related earth/human sciences.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in various outdoor conditions (e.g., heat, dust, uneven terrain).
- Excellent attention to detail and observational skills.
- Strong work ethic and ability to follow instructions diligently.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer literacy (e.g., data entry, word processing).
Preferred Qualifications
- Enrollment in or completion of an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program in Anthropology, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Previous volunteer or internship experience in field research, museum collections, or laboratory work.
- Familiarity with GIS software or GPS devices.
- Valid driver's license.
