Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Anesthetist to join our multidisciplinary team at Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Derry/Londonderry. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive anaesthetic services across a wide range of surgical specialities, critical care, and pain management. This position requires a professional committed to delivering excellent patient care, participating in continuous professional development, and contributing to the training and education of junior medical staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments and prepare patients for anaesthesia.
  • Administer general, regional, and local anaesthesia for various surgical procedures.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs and physiological responses during surgery and recovery.
  • Manage acute and chronic pain post-operatively, including prescribing appropriate analgesia.
  • Provide anaesthetic support in emergency situations and participate in resuscitation efforts.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in on-call rotas and out-of-hours cover as required.
  • Contribute to clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, and service development.
  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff and medical students.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records.

Required Skills

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Anaesthetics or equivalent specialist registration.
  • Significant post-CCT experience in a broad range of anaesthetic specialities.
  • Advanced airway management skills and experience in critical care.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team-working skills.
  • Ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Demonstrable commitment to continuing professional development and lifelong learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) or equivalent.
  • Experience in a sub-speciality area such as regional anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia, or paediatric anaesthesia.
  • Previous experience in teaching, training, or supervising junior doctors.
  • Involvement in research or quality improvement projects.
