Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and reliable Special Needs Transport Assistant to join our team in Maltby. This vital role involves assisting children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) during their journeys to and from school or other educational settings. The position operates on split shifts, typically covering morning and afternoon routes, making it an ideal opportunity for parents looking for work that fits around school hours. You will ensure the safety, comfort, and well-being of passengers, working closely with drivers and parents/guardians.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist passengers with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in boarding and alighting the vehicle safely.
  • Ensure passengers are securely seated and comfortable throughout the journey, using appropriate safety equipment as required.
  • Provide a safe, supportive, and caring environment for all passengers.
  • Communicate effectively and empathetically with children, young people, parents, guardians, and school staff.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and company policies, including safeguarding procedures.
  • Manage any challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner, seeking assistance when necessary.
  • Assist the driver with route navigation and passenger welfare checks.
  • Report any incidents, accidents, or concerns regarding passenger welfare promptly and accurately.

Required Skills

  • Experience working with children, ideally those with special educational needs or disabilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient and empathetic approach.
  • Ability to maintain calm and professionalism in various situations.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and reliability.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures for children and vulnerable adults.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, or willingness to undergo one.
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Relevant professional training or certifications in child care, special needs support, or similar fields.
  • Local knowledge of Maltby and surrounding areas.
