Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Phlebotomist to join our dynamic team at Saugeen Memorial Hospital in Southampton, Ontario. Key Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients of all ages, ensuring accurate specimen collection.
- Verify patient identity and label specimens correctly, adhering to all laboratory and hospital policies.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including proper disposal of hazardous waste.
- Adhere strictly to infection control and universal precautions.
- Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients to explain procedures and alleviate anxiety.
- Accurately document all procedures and patient information in electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Transport specimens to the laboratory efficiently and safely.
- Assist with inventory management of phlebotomy supplies.
- Participate in quality assurance programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide guidance and support to less experienced colleagues or trainees.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Phlebotomist in a clinical or hospital setting.
- Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques for adult, pediatric, and geriatric patients.
- Thorough knowledge of specimen collection procedures, order of draw, and proper handling.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-first approach.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in using laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR).
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety and confidentiality.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in fast-paced or challenging situations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification from a recognized phlebotomy program (e.g., CSMLS, ASCP, CPT).
- Experience with specialized venipuncture techniques (e.g., difficult draws).
- Knowledge of Canadian healthcare regulations and standards.
- Proficiency in multiple languages is an asset.
- Experience working in a community hospital setting.
