Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Principal Medicinal Chemist to join our dynamic drug discovery team in Nashville, TN. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the design, synthesis, and optimization of novel small molecules aimed at discovering groundbreaking therapeutic agents across various disease areas. This role requires a strong track record of independent research, innovative problem-solving, and the ability to lead projects within a multi-disciplinary, multi-national biotech environment. You will be instrumental in driving programs from hit identification through lead optimization, contributing significantly to our pipeline of life-changing medicines.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and synthesis of novel small molecules for drug discovery projects, leveraging state-of-the-art medicinal chemistry principles and technologies.
- Formulate and execute synthetic strategies to prepare target compounds efficiently and with high purity.
- Analyze SAR data, ADME, and physicochemical properties to guide compound optimization and selection.
- Present research findings, strategies, and recommendations to project teams and senior management.
- Collaborate effectively with biologists, pharmacologists, computational chemists, and other scientific disciplines.
- Mentor junior chemists and contribute to a culture of scientific excellence and innovation.
- Stay abreast of current scientific literature, emerging technologies, and competitive landscape in medicinal chemistry.
- Manage external collaborations and CRO activities as needed.
Required Skills
- PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, or a related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of industrial experience in medicinal chemistry within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sector.
- Demonstrated expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, reaction mechanism, and modern analytical techniques (NMR, MS, HPLC).
- Proven ability to independently design and execute complex multi-step syntheses.
- Strong understanding of medicinal chemistry principles including structure-activity relationships (SAR), ADME, and drugability.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong track record of scientific innovation and productivity.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex data clearly.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading medicinal chemistry projects from hit-to-lead through lead optimization stages.
- Experience in specific therapeutic areas such as oncology, immunology, or neuroscience.
- Proficiency with cheminformatics tools and computational chemistry applications.
- Track record of scientific publications and patent inventorship.
