Job Description

Join the Florida Museum of Natural History as a Graduate Paleontology Assistant, an exceptional opportunity designed for recent graduates eager to launch their professional careers in paleontological research and fieldwork. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in field expeditions for fossil discovery and excavation across Florida and potentially other regions.
  • Assist with the preparation, cleaning, and conservation of fossil specimens in the laboratory.
  • Accurately catalog and document specimens, ensuring proper record-keeping and database entry.
  • Conduct preliminary research, literature reviews, and data analysis to support ongoing projects.
  • Aid in the curation and maintenance of the museum's extensive fossil collections.
  • Contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and educational outreach programs.
  • Learn and apply advanced paleontological techniques and methodologies.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment in both field and lab settings.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated interest and foundational knowledge in paleontology.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity in varied outdoor conditions (fieldwork).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for specimen handling and data entry.
  • Proficiency with basic laboratory equipment and techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (academic or volunteer) in fossil excavation, preparation, or museum collections.
  • Familiarity with GIS software or other geospatial data tools.
  • Experience with microscopy and photography for scientific documentation.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork.
