Job Description
DNEG is seeking an experienced and innovative VFX Technical Director to join our award-winning team in Burnaby. This is an exceptional opportunity for a talented individual to contribute to groundbreaking visual effects projects, supporting our diverse pipeline and artists. As a VFX Technical Director, you will be instrumental in developing tools, pipeline solutions, and workflows, ensuring efficient and high-quality asset creation and shot production across various departments. You will bridge the gap between creative vision and technical execution, troubleshooting complex issues and empowering artists to achieve their best work.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain custom tools and scripts in Python for various VFX software (e.g., Maya, Houdini, Nuke).
- Collaborate with artists and production teams to identify workflow bottlenecks and propose technical solutions.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for artists, resolving software, pipeline, and tool-related issues.
- Design and optimize workflows for asset creation, lighting, rendering, and compositing departments.
- Document tools, scripts, and workflows for knowledge sharing and artist training.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to the overall studio pipeline architecture.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in VFX.
- Mentor junior TDs and artists on technical best practices.
Required Skills
- Strong proficiency in Python scripting for VFX.
- Solid understanding of 3D DCC packages such as Maya and Houdini.
- Experience with compositing software like Nuke.
- Familiarity with production pipelines and asset management systems.
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of linear algebra and 3D computer graphics principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, or a related field.
- Experience with C++ or other compiled languages.
- Knowledge of render farm management and optimization (e.g., Deadline).
- Experience with USD (Universal Scene Description).
- Familiarity with shader development (e.g., OSL, GLSL, VEX).
- Previous experience working on feature films or high-end television series.
- Portfolio demonstrating technical projects and problem-solving.
