Job Description

The Washington State Historical Society is seeking a passionate and dedicated Public History & Heritage Intern to join our team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various aspects of public history, cultural heritage preservation, and museum operations. The intern will contribute to ongoing projects related to exhibit development, archival research, educational programming, and community outreach. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in museums, archives, historical societies, or related cultural institutions. The intern will work closely with experienced professionals, learning best practices in the field and making meaningful contributions to the Society’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with research and content development for new and existing exhibitions.
  • Support the cataloging and preservation of archival materials, including documents, photographs, and artifacts.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of educational programs for diverse audiences.
  • Aid in the organization and digitization of historical records.
  • Participate in community engagement events and outreach initiatives.
  • Conduct primary and secondary source research to support historical interpretations.
  • Help maintain the cultural site's interpretive displays and public areas.

Required Skills

  • Strong interest in history, cultural heritage, and museum studies.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in History, Museum Studies, Public History, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • Previous volunteer or internship experience in a museum, archive, or historical society.
  • Familiarity with archival best practices or collections management software.
  • Experience with digital humanities tools or platforms.
