Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Paleontology Research Assistant to join our dynamic team within the Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences. This full-time position will support ongoing paleontological research projects focusing on fossil preparation, identification, data collection, and laboratory management. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students, contributing significantly to our understanding of ancient life and environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation, cleaning, and conservation of fossil specimens.
- Conduct preliminary identification and cataloging of fossil materials.
- Maintain detailed records of specimens, samples, and research data.
- Perform basic laboratory tasks, including equipment calibration and maintenance.
- Aid in fieldwork logistics, collection, and processing of new fossil finds.
- Conduct literature reviews and assist with data compilation for research papers and presentations.
- Support the organization and maintenance of the department's fossil collections.
- Assist in the preparation of research grants and reports.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated interest in paleontology and fossil research.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Proficiency in basic data entry and record-keeping.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Physical ability to perform fieldwork, including lifting moderate weights and working in various outdoor conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a paleontology lab or museum setting.
- Experience with fossil preparation techniques (e.g., mechanical preparation, chemical etching).
- Familiarity with geological mapping or paleontological survey techniques.
- Proficiency with scientific software (e.g., GIS, R, statistical packages).
- Basic knowledge of anatomical terminology for various fossil groups.
