Job Description

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Paleontology Field Technician to join our team for projects primarily focused on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) dig sites. This role involves intensive field work across various outdoor environments, contributing to the discovery, recovery, and documentation of significant paleontological resources. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of a Paleontological Principal Investigator or Project Manager, ensuring adherence to scientific protocols and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct systematic pedestrian surveys for paleontological resources across diverse landscapes.
  • Excavate, collect, and prepare fossil specimens in the field, following established paleontological methods.
  • Record detailed field notes, maps, and photographs of localities and specimens.
  • Utilize GPS/GIS technology for accurate mapping and data collection.
  • Assist with the transport and curation of collected specimens.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and site-specific regulations, including those for BLM lands.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, clients, and agency personnel.
  • Maintain field equipment in good working order.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 6 months of demonstrable field experience in paleontology, geology, or archaeology.
  • Ability to identify common fossil types and geological formations.
  • Proficiency in basic hand tools and field excavation techniques.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to record accurate and legible field notes, maps, and other documentation.
  • Competence with GPS units and basic mapping software.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles in rugged terrain.
  • Physical stamina to work long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions and remote locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Experience working on BLM-permitted projects.
  • Knowledge of federal and state cultural resource management laws and regulations (e.g., NEPA, NHPA, PRPA).
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Defensive driving training.
