Job Description
We are seeking highly motivated and safety-conscious Oversize Load Pilot Drivers to join our network as independent contractors. This remote role involves providing essential escort services for oversize and overweight loads across various routes, primarily within the Midwest region but potentially nationwide. As a critical member of our specialized transport operations, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe transit of challenging cargo by maintaining clear communication, managing traffic, and adhering to all state and federal regulations for oversize load escorts. This is a 100% remote position where you will operate your own certified escort vehicle.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a pilot/escort vehicle safely and professionally in accordance with all state and federal regulations.
- Maintain constant communication with oversize load drivers, dispatch, and other relevant parties.
- Identify potential hazards and mitigate risks during transit, ensuring the safety of the load, public, and other drivers.
- Manage traffic control, including directing traffic, flagging, and lane closures as required.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of escort vehicle and equipment.
- Assist with route planning and pre-scouting as needed.
- Document and report any incidents, delays, or issues encountered during transit.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and company policies.
- Keep up-to-date with changing state and federal regulations regarding oversize load movements.
Required Skills
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record, or a standard driver's license with relevant pilot car certifications (depending on state regulations).
- Proven experience as an oversize load pilot driver or similar heavy haul escort role.
- In-depth knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to oversize and overweight load movements.
- Proficiency in operating pilot/escort vehicle equipment (lights, signs, communication devices).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and make quick, sound decisions under pressure.
- Reliable and well-maintained escort vehicle meeting all required specifications (lights, signs, radios, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Pilot Car Operator (CPCO) or equivalent certifications.
- Experience with various types of oversize loads (e.g., wind energy components, industrial machinery).
- Familiarity with GPS navigation and routing software.
- Ability to travel extensively and be away from home for extended periods.
