Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Collections Aide with a focus on Historic Specimens to join our curatorial team. This role is crucial for the meticulous care, documentation, and preservation of our valuable historic collections, ensuring their accessibility for research, education, and public display. The ideal candidate will have a passion for history, a keen eye for detail, and a commitment to upholding museum best practices in collections management.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the inventory, cataloging, and rehousing of historic specimens, including artifacts, documents, and natural history items.
- Perform data entry and maintenance in the museum's collection management database (e.g., PastPerfect, TMS).
- Conduct basic condition assessments and assist with preventative conservation measures under supervision.
- Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light) in collection storage areas and galleries.
- Support the preparation and installation of specimens for exhibitions and educational programs.
- Handle and transport collection items safely and according to established museum protocols.
- Assist with research requests and provide access to collection materials for staff and approved external researchers.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of collection records and labeling.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and recovery efforts for collections.
Required Skills
- Proven attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Basic understanding of museum collections management principles and best practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and experience with database entry.
- Ability to handle delicate and fragile materials with care and precision.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical ability to lift up to 30 lbs, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Anthropology, History, Library Science, or a related field.
- Previous experience in a museum, archive, or cultural heritage institution.
- Familiarity with specific collection management software (e.g., PastPerfect, The Museum System).
- Knowledge of basic conservation techniques for various material types.
- Experience with digital imaging or photography for documentation.
