Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Natural History Specimen Coordinator with strong database management skills to join our team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the organization, digitization, and maintenance of our extensive natural history collections, ensuring data integrity and accessibility for researchers and educators. This position requires a passion for natural sciences, exceptional attention to detail, and proficiency in collection management software and database systems. You will play a key part in preserving biodiversity data and making it available for scientific inquiry.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain natural history specimen collections, including plants, insects, and vertebrates.
- Digitize new and existing specimen data into the collection management database (e.g., Specify, Arctos).
- Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and completeness across all records.
- Develop and implement best practices for specimen handling, storage, and preservation.
- Assist researchers and students with accessing collection data and specimens.
- Train and supervise student assistants or volunteers in collection protocols and data entry.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of collection policies and procedures.
- Prepare specimens for loans and incoming shipments, ensuring proper documentation.
- Conduct regular inventories and audits of collection materials.
- Generate reports and data extracts for internal and external research projects.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Museum Studies, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in natural history collection management or a related role.
- Proven proficiency with natural history collection database software (e.g., Specify, Arctos, EMu).
- Strong understanding of taxonomic principles and biodiversity data standards.
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to handle delicate specimens with care.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant scientific or museum studies field.
- Experience with imaging and digital asset management for natural history specimens.
- Knowledge of SQL or other database querying languages.
- Familiarity with GIS software for geospatial data integration.
- Experience in grant writing or project management related to collection digitization.
- Prior experience supervising or training staff/volunteers.
