Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Microbiologist to join our water quality team in Exeter. In this critical role, you will be responsible for conducting microbiological analyses of water samples from various sources, including raw water, treated water, and environmental samples. Your work will directly contribute to ensuring the safety and compliance of our water supply, safeguarding public health and protecting the environment. You will work within a state-of-the-art laboratory, applying your expertise to identify, quantify, and characterize microorganisms relevant to water quality standards and operational processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and non-routine microbiological analysis on water and wastewater samples using standard laboratory methods (e.g., membrane filtration, MPN, culture-based techniques).
- Identify and enumerate coliforms, E. coli, enterococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other relevant indicator organisms.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as incubators, autoclaves, and microscopes.
- Prepare culture media, reagents, and solutions accurately and according to strict protocols.
- Record, interpret, and report analytical results precisely, ensuring data integrity and traceability.
- Investigate anomalous results and troubleshoot analytical issues.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations, quality control procedures, and industry standards (e.g., ISO 17025, DWI regulations).
- Contribute to method development, validation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participate in internal and external quality assurance schemes.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of practical laboratory experience in microbiology, preferably in a water, environmental, or public health setting.
- Proficiency in aseptic techniques and standard microbiological methods.
- Strong understanding of waterborne pathogens and indicator organisms.
- Familiarity with laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 17025).
- Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in using laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Microbiology or a related discipline.
- Experience with molecular microbiology techniques (e.g., qPCR).
- Knowledge of drinking water regulations (DWI) and wastewater discharge consents.
- Previous experience working in an accredited laboratory environment (e.g., UKAS accreditation).
