Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable Medical Center Porter to join our essential service team at Sunderland Royal Hospital. This vital role involves providing crucial support services across the hospital, ensuring the smooth and efficient movement of patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies. Adhering to strict NHS standards, you will play a key part in the operational flow of our medical facility, directly contributing to patient safety and comfort. This position requires a strong work ethic, compassion, and the ability to work effectively within a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and compassionately transport patients between wards, departments, and to and from ambulances, ensuring their comfort and dignity.
  • Move medical equipment, beds, trolleys, and other items as required throughout the hospital.
  • Deliver medical notes, specimens, blood products, and other essential items to designated areas promptly and securely.
  • Manage and transport waste, soiled linen, and other materials in accordance with infection control policies.
  • Assist with the delivery and collection of goods and supplies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of transport equipment.
  • Respond promptly to requests and emergencies, demonstrating initiative and teamwork.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations, manual handling procedures, and NHS protocols.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate approach.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good physical fitness and ability to perform duties involving lifting, pushing, and prolonged standing/walking.
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety principles.
  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures accurately.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a portering role, ideally within a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of hospital layout and procedures.
  • Basic IT literacy for using communication devices (e.g., pagers, radios).
  • Current First Aid certification.
